Premier Announces 98 New Jobs at DEW Facility in Miramichi

MIRAMICHI (GNB) – A total of 98 new jobs will be created at DEW Engineering and Development ULC in Miramichi, announced Premier Brian Gallant and company officials today.

"New Brunswickers are good, hard workers," said Gallant. "This provides a strong workforce to businesses that are in New Brunswick. It is great to see DEW recognize what Miramichiers and New Brunswickers have to offer."

DEW is creating the jobs to deliver on several new defence and security contracts. The company provides armour systems for civilian police cars, vehicle upgrades and life extensions, as well as mobile shelter systems for military purposes.

Incorporated in 1978, the company is headquartered in Ottawa and has a second location in Miramichi. It has 40 employees at the Miramichi location and employs between 200 and 300 people within the entire organization.

"DEW greatly appreciates the support of the government and the premier in helping make this progress possible," said Ian Marsh, president of DEW. "Our New Brunswick workforce, facilities and products are world class. We are delighted at the opportunity to continue to invest and grow our capability in Miramichi."

Opportunities NB will contribute $400,000 in the form of a payroll rebate. The Regional Development Corporation will contribute $100,000 through the Miramichi Regional Economic Development and Innovation Fund for capital expenditures. The project will increase the provincial GDP by $6 million annually.

The company has invested more than $3 million in equipment, making it one of the leading armour manufacturers in North America. The positions, which are part of the manufacturing process, require various skill-sets. The average annual salary for these positions is $32,000.

"Today’s announcement is great news as 98 people will be able to work and live right here in the Miramichi region," said Gallant.

Opportunities NB is a Crown corporation that seeks to attract and support opportunities to grow the economy and create jobs. It provides support services for businesses across the province.
