The Buyer reports directly to the Supply Chain Manager

Job Purpose:

The Buyer is responsible for sourcing and purchasing raw materials and subcontracting at best value while meeting contract requirements.

Responsibilities & Duties:

 (Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following)


  • Obtain critical material, components, equipment and services at the best value for the company.
  • Obtain and evaluate quotes.
  • Negotiate process and delivery terms.
  • Ensure vendor database is up-to-date.
  • Develop and maintain strong vendor relationships in order to obtain quotes and order products.
  • Maintain a list of alternate suppliers.
  • In conjunction with Inventory Group monitor and administer the movement of all materials and products in and out of inventory including min/max levels and reports generated from our systems.
  • Coordinate requirements with Project Managers, Warehouse and Production departments.
  • Assist with development of efficient purchasing processes and systems.
  • Prepare requests for information, proposals and quotes as required.
  • Ensure optimum combination of quality, delivery, price, quantity and service for acquired goods and services.


  • Ensure compliance to corporate purchasing strategies, policies, processes and contracts.
  • Generate purchase orders for procurements using Visual Manufacturing.
  • Direct involvement in raw material, electro-mechanical and sub-contracted services acquisition.
  • Expedite aggressively as required.
  • Provide, develop and analyze purchasing contracts with preferred suppliers.
  • Monitor and audit price, service and quality points in system.
  • Assist with selection, certifying and negotiating of contracts with specific suppliers.
  • Work with various internal groups to help better expedite the procurement process.
  • Negotiate terms and conditions.

Follow up:

  • Develop and track supplier performance and vendor corrective actions.
  • Track delivery of product.
  • Resolve issues concerning questionable invoices.
  • Meet with vendors as required.


  • Travel as required if needed.
  • Adhere to all environmental, health and safety regulations and follow the environmental and quality management systems.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Minimum of two years previous purchasing experience in manufacturing.
  • Experience using an ERP system
  • Experience working in a fast paced purchasing environment

Education/ Professional Certification:

  • Post secondary education in business related field or equivalent experience
  • Formal purchasing training.


  • Aptitude for learning quickly with minimum instruction
  • Able to maintain a high level of customer service in a fast paced work environment
  • High level of integrity and honesty
  • Excellent negotiation skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Able to organize and prioritize work
  • Strong problem solving and decision making skills
  • Technical background would be an asset.
  • An accounting background would be an asset.
